Emanuel (Manny) Tramontana, 86, of Hamilton, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at home.
Manny was born in Trenton, NJ on January 8, 1933, lived in his paternal grandparents’ home in Trenton, then moved to Hamilton in 1978. He was a graduate of St. James Parochial School, Jr. High School No. 1, Trenton Central High School, University of Pennsylvania Liberal Arts College and University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 until 1958.
Manny was a teacher of science in the Trenton Public School System at Jr. 2 and Jr. 4 for 42 years. While at Junior 2, he also served as 7th grade class advisor and directed 12 school productions of Broadway musicals, each of which had a cast of more than 100 students.
He was a leader in the Trenton Education Association, serving as President, 1st and 2nd Vice President, newsletter editor and chair of nearly every committee, including the team that negotiated the first formal teachers’ contract in NJ. During his time, he wrote and co-directed two city-wide teacher shows to raise money for the Trenton High School scholarship fund. He served on various NJEA committees and hosted local radio programs to promote Mercer County and NJ education. After retirement, he served on the Mercer County Retired Educators Association executive board for over 24 years, as president and chair of social and other committees.
Manny received numerous awards, including the Governors’ Outstanding Teacher Award while at Jr. 2 and Jr. 4, New Jersey PTA Life Membership, and the MCEA Distinguished Service Award. In 1975 he was named Outstanding New Jersey Secondary Teacher of the Year by Princeton University.
Manny enjoyed summers at the NJ shore, working in his yard, eating at local restaurants, the NY theater, the NY Yankees, “Wednesday Pasta Night” at cousin Doris Rafferty’s home, hosting the traditional Tramontana Christmas Eve celebration for 36 years after the death of his grandfather, and his pet dogs. He had a great love for traveling, having visited over 40 states and 50 countries.
He was the son of the late Charles and Jennie Rotundo Tramontana, and grandson of the late Nick and Jessie Tramontana, who reared him. He is survived by many Tramontana and Rotundo family members, and many other close relatives and friends, whom he dearly loved. In short, Manny enjoyed life, and appreciated the love and kindness he received along the way.
Funeral services will begin on Friday, April 5, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ.
Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hamilton.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, April 5, 2019, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Saul Colonial Home.
