Dr. Maurice J. Smith, 93, of Mercerville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, October 15, 2018, at Compassionate Care Hospice at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Hamilton.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, Maurice practiced veterinary medicine in Mercer County for over 60 years, and was the owner of Quaker Bridge Animal Hospital in Hamilton. He received the Hamilton Township Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.
Maurice attended St. Joseph’s College (now University) and earned his veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania (Class of 1948). What he enjoyed most in his profession was not only attending to all the animals over the years, but also engaging with the pet’s owners. He was an avid boater and horseman, having raised and trained many horses, as well as showing horses with his daughter, Dianne. He was a lifelong student and enjoyed learning new languages and exploring new interests through reading and travel. Most of all, Maurice enjoyed people and conversation, sharing stories, jokes and perspectives on life.
Predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Winifred (McGovern) Smith; his loving wife of 52 years, Anne Brennan Smith; his son, Gregory Smith; his daughter, Dianne; and his daughter-in-law, Patricia Smith; he is survived by his sons, Mark Smith and wife, Maureen O’Rourke of Ringoes and Brian Smith and wife, Sharon, of Mercerville; his daughter, Maureen Smith O’Brien and husband, Clifford, of Honolulu, HI; his 9 grandchildren, Shannon (Damon), Emily (Lance), Patrick (Jessie), Ann-Marie (John), Tyler (fiancé, Maggie), Olivia, Connor, James and Christopher; his 4 great-grandchildren, Nora, Emmett, Drew and Bonnie; his nieces, Laurie Milko, Linda Mauro; his nephew, Michael Torpey; his special friends, Carol Costello, Karin Sienkiewicz, Lisa Grimm, James Riley, Nancy Carroll and Mary Varone; and his dog, Kip.
