Russell LeRoy Humphrey, 94, of Hamilton, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2019, in the comfort of his home after a brief illness.
He was born and raised in Trenton and later moved to Hamilton, where he raised his family. Russell was a graduate of Trenton Central High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees. He served in the South Pacific during World War II, and with his unit, received the bronze star for valor.
He retired from U.S. Steel, Fairless, PA after 34 years as a coal chemical operator. He then worked for the Treasury Department of the State of New Jersey for 14 years.
Russell was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows/St. Anthony Parish, where he served as an usher for many years. He loved the 1940’s big bands, especially Glenn Miller. He enjoyed spending time with his family, whether it was going to Hot Dog Johnny’s with his sons or traveling with his daughter. Many fun hours were spent with the grand kids and great-grand kids as their caregiver.
Holy Redeemer Hospice was involved in Russell’s final days and they are to be thanked and commended for their kindness and gentle care.
Predeceased by his parents, Harold B. and Anna Mary (Henry) Humphrey; his brothers, Norwood and Harold and sister, Lillian, as well as his beloved wife of over 70 years, Clare (Emily) Humphrey; he is survived by his three sons, Paul, Alan and wife, Adele, of Hamilton and Brian of Plainsboro; his daughter, Rita Humphrey of Hamilton; two granddaughters, Susan Tucci and husband, Richard, of Las Vegas, NV and Elizabeth Fields and husband, Robert, of Hamilton; five great-grandchildren, Dominic and Matthew Tucci and Samantha, Kaylee and Thomas Fields as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will begin on Friday, August 16, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Parish, Our Lady of Sorrows RC Church, 3816 East State Street Extension, Hamilton, NJ.
Interment will follow at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Hamilton, NJ.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, August 15, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Saul Colonial Home.
