Obituary

Ruth Fearnley Harttraft, 88, of Robbinsville NJ, passed away peacefully on Friday February 1, 2019, at Bear Creek Assisted Living in West Windsor.

Born in Trenton, NJ, Ruth was a lifelong area resident. After graduating High School, she worked as a bookkeeper for the State Department of the Treasury prior to her marriage to James Harttraft, Jr. She and her husband had two sons, Gregory and Ronald. During their marriage of forty-five years, Ruth assisted her husband at his accounting firm. She enjoyed volunteering in the community and served as den mother for Cub Scout Troop 63, preparing her sons well for Boy Scouting.

Ruth spent summers with her family in Seaside Park, sailing the Barnegat Bay. She also loved visiting her sister, Alice, and brother-in-law, Donald, in South Harpswell, Maine.

She was a longtime member of the Saint Mark United Methodist Church, participating in the United Methodist Women club, the Lydia Circle, and Annual Christmas Bazaar, where she had a leadership role in the church’s major fundraisers. She supported the ministry and missions of Saint Mark United Methodist Church and was instrumental in the new church construction.

Professionally, Ruth was a licensed social worker, who touched many lives, serving 27 years as the Director of Mobile Meals of Hamilton Township. She coordinated volunteers to deliver meals to aging and disabled clients bringing joy to many isolated individuals on a daily basis. She was the recipient of several public service awards including Outstanding Women of New Jersey in 1991, by Douglas Woman's College at Rutgers University.

More recently, Ruth enjoyed spending time at the shore, sitting in the sun and feeding the swans. The highlight of her days was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Ruth was a dog lover, and had many dogs throughout her life. She was fortunate to have had a lifelong friend, Lois Kotelnicki, with whom she spent time and traveled.

Above all, those who knew Ruth will remember her for her kind spirit and her many expressions of "thank you" which demonstrated her grace even to her last days. Ruth devoted her life to others and never expected anything in return. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Predeceased by her parents, Frank and Caroline Fearnley; her sister, Alice Lawton and husband, Donald; her husband, James Harttraft, Jr., and her daughter-in-law, Barbara Harttraft. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Ronald (Chrys); her grandchildren, Tyler, Justin, Danielle Harttraft, Heather Donovan (Chris) and her great-grandson, Carson Donovan.

Friends and family are invited to attend the burial service on Friday, February 8, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, 1800 Hamilton Avenue, Hamilton, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ruth’s memory to Saint Mark United Methodist Church, 465 Paxson Avenue, Hamilton, NJ 08690.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ.
