Catherine “Kay” Smith, 74, of Hamilton, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2019.
Kay was born and raised in Havertown, PA. She was a graduate of Haverford High School and proudly sang the alma mater up until her last days. After high school, she attended Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and earned her RN degree, which established not only her career but also her genuine love of nursing. She worked nights as the Nurse Manager at Robert Wood Johnson Hamilton Hospital for over 13 years, enabling her to be home each day for her children. She was a lifelong learner and returned to school at age 50 to earn her BSN. Following that, she achieved additional credentials in wound care and ostomy. Later in her career, she became a trainer for LPNs, Home Heath Aids, and Medication Aids. She was always so proud of her students and spent countless hours helping young men and women graduates find nursing placements throughout the Tri-State area.
But first and foremost, Kay was a devoted mother. She treasured her children and cherished every moment with them. Her commitment and exuberance as a Mom is perhaps best exemplified by her having received two different speeding tickets on the way to the same track meet! Her children’s passions became her own, and she was the most vocal sideline cheerleader at soccer and baseball games, karate tournaments, and track and cross-country meets. She served with great dedication on the PTA throughout her children’s school years and received a Lifetime Membership Award in 1997. She was most enthusiastic to serve as President of the Steinert PTA, arriving at dawn before every home football game to get the coffee brewing and the hot dogs ready. She was a true Spartan at heart.
Kay married her high school sweetheart, Dave, and together they shared 52 years of memories. Kay is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Dave and three children she adored, David (Traci), Cathy (Chris), and Stephen (Marybeth). She was the loving grandmother to Zackary, Owen, Ava, Finley, and Maggie.
